chapter fourteen – “Welcome to hell, Ladies.”

He wasn't joking. The next morning, as Ay'Sha and Mindy arrived, they found they had to push through a throng just to get to the doors. Sean met them. "Welcome to Hell, ladies. Day one."

"Oh just take your coffee and can it," Mindy said.

"I should've gotten double for everyone..."

"We've got a parking lot full of school buses," Ay'Sha said. "And a mob of kids at the doors...which is a little scary."

"Accelerated programs planned special field trips today. I'd say we've got a fair number of homeschoolers, too."

"Ah. Well, about that coffee."

Sean leaned on the desk. "Marcus, you ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be, Doc. Ready as I'll ever be."

"All right, Hosni's giving the kids' presentation at eight, nine, and ten, then I think Eugene is taking over. Philip is giving the 'professional' lecture tonight. David and I will be on the steps keeping the press at bay, and Ay'Sha, you, two volunteers, and Mindy are our first rung of the tour circuit. And...Mindy, am I forgetting anything?"

"Only that we've got the movie showing at nine, eleven, and two."

"Right, good. I think we're all set. I'll have some volunteer tour guides in at noon to take some of the pressure, hopefully. If not, David and I will jump into the fray. Finish your coffee and I'll come back in about half an hour to open up."

As Sean trotted upstairs into the offices, Ay'Sha smiled at Marcus. "That's the happiest I've ever seen him," she said.

"I know," Marcus agreed. "It's kinda' scary. You don't think he's possessed, do you?"

She shrugged. "I wouldn't doubt it."

Hosni came out of the exhibit corridor. "I think I'm ready...of course with kids, you give them a good dose of the ick factor and they're happy."

Philip was behind him, his nose wrinkled in distaste. "I'm glad you're the one doing the kids' lectures. You can handle impertinent questions..."

"So can you," Hosni replied. "But only when they're asked by rat-brained adults. Kids are at least innocent in their ignorance of things. And...ah...imaginative."

"Yes, imaginative...like that boy who asked you if the priests picked the 'bogeys' out of Pharaohs' noses when they 'marmaladed' them."

Hosni threw back his head, laughing. "It was a valid question, and I'm sure more than one..."

"Spare me, as you are my friend."

"All right, all right. You keep your impertinent adults, I'll keep the embarrassing children."

Marcus nudged Ay'Sha with his elbow. "Dr. Teroth, how many boogers do you think they got out of King Tut?"

"See, Philip, what'd I tell you? Impertinent adult question. Your turn."

"No, I believe that was addressed to you."

"Marcus, I think Tut blew his nose frequently...kept the embalmers from having that problem, you know."

"Ah. I think it'd be a good subject for my thesis, though."

"I wouldn't suggest it. You do actually want to be an archaeologist, don't you?"

He smiled and nodded. "But I want to do kids' lectures."

"Well, if you can talk Sean into getting you out from behind this desk, you can come up and help me with them.
